Who's it for?
Anyone responsible for training primary health
care workers.
What's the objective?
The course aims to:
- provide an account of perinatal mood
disorders and their impact, and understanding the value
of identifying and treating women suffering from depression,
both during pregnancy and postnatally.
- provide attendees with the necessary
tools to detect depression and then to treat it, in a
supportive psychotherapeutic environment, using principles
and skills derived from non-directive counselling, cognitive
behavioural theory and applying principles from the Social.
Baby.
How's it organised?
The course runs over 3 consecutive days.
All sessions are held in Reading University's
School of Psychology. Campus accommodation is provided for
the intermediate nights.
Day 1 starts with coffee at 9.30 am, prior
to the first session at 10.00 am. The last session finishes
at 5.00pm. After dinner the evening is free.
Day 2 runs from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm. There
is a video presentation prior to dinner.
Day 3 finishes at 4.00 pm.

What’s involved?
Conventional lectures; group discussion;
syndicate work; skills practice, video watching and interpretation.
You are invited to bring case study material
for group discussion. It should be based on your experience
of working with mothers and Postnatal Depression.
What does the course cover?
- depression: understanding the impact
of depression on the family
- Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale
and its limitations: making a mood assessment (the clinical
interview)
- basic counselling skills: "Active
Reflective Listening"
- selected techniques derived from cognitive
behavioural theory
- the mother-baby relationship - behavioural
intervention
- programme development
- training management

- a DVD comprising PND-related video clips
