Course Content

There are 5 core components to our full 4-day course:

  • Learning about depression and understanding the impact of depression on the mother, the baby and others.
  • Recognising the strengths and limitations of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Assessing maternal mood by appropriate use of the EPDS and a standardised interview.
  • Planning brief supportive intervention using active reflective listening skills and some techniques from cognitive behavioural theory.
  • Addressing the mother-baby relationship: applying principles from "The Social Baby".
  • Investigating other treatments such as anti-depressant therapy.

  • 1 day Workshop

Residential Course:
  • 3 day Course for Trainers
This is based at the Reading university campus. Includes accomodation and meals, CD, video clips and two books. Participants are permitted to use these, and other course materials, to support their own training courses whilst working for their sponsoring organisation.

These courses do not equip participants to become therapists or counsellors.

Training in the use of therapeutic techniques is limited to those strategies that have been found to be helpful in the management of postnatal depression and concentrates on practice rather than theory.
